What is HardGuard™? HardGuard is a computer card that protects you from computer software disasters caused by viruses, Windows blue screen conditions, registry errors, etc. It even protects CMOS settings. So if you get smacked with a virus, system crash, user error or other calamity, just tell HardGuard to restore your computer to the backup version it has hidden away. Within seconds, you're back in business, as if nothing ever happened.
How does HardGuard™ work? When your computer is set up and operating exactly the way you want it, you save the hard drive image using HardGuard's BACKUP feature. BACKUP is on your startup menu, along with RESTORE and NORMAL. You may have guessed by now that you can select BACKUP, or RESTORE when you start your system. BACKUP saves everything about your computer the last time you used it. If you select RESTORE, your system is restored to the last BACKUP image you saved. If you just want to use your computer the way you did last time, select NORMAL and you get the same software you had last time.
Then if you get hit with a virus or another problem rears its ugly head, simply press reset and tell HardGuard to restore your hard drive to the last backup you made. Within seconds, you're up and running again.
Will the "backup" process take a lot of space on my hard drive? No, HardGuard™ protection technology takes practically no space at all. The only "lost" space you encounter with your HardGuard is the size of the files that you modify between your "backups". Applications typically keep their changes in small files (i.e. INI files), while the main content of your applications (and operating system) are in files that are never changed (i.e. EXE, COM, DLL, etc..). All that is left on your HDD is your data files. The typical user creates data files that are relatively "small" in comparison to the size of their HDD. The HardGuard keeps your protected data files, applications, and operating system available for instant restoration at your command (it really does happen in about 2 seconds!). You can use your Hard Guard effectively on a system with 95% of the hard drive consumed by your applications and data.
Will HardGuard™ help me if my hard drive has a mechanical failure? Maybe. It depends on the type of mechanical failure. We strongly suggest that you should still make routine offsite backups of your critical files, as the HardGuard won't save you from fire or theft!
Is HardGuard™ easy to use? Easy as pie. You only have three options to choose from in HardGuard's start menu: Normal Boot, Restore Hard Drive and Backup Hard Drive. (Pretty simple, right?)
Does HardGuard™ back up my hard drive automatically? No. It's up to you to back up your hard drive. When your hard drive is set up and operating precisely the way you want it to, tell HardGuard to back it up—a process that literally takes seconds. (Keep in mind that HardGuard always restores your hard drive to the last backup you make, so be sure that everything is okay before you back up.)
How often should I back up my hard drive? As often as it takes for you to have your important settings and information under HardGuard's protection—something that differs for every person and computer. In a school environment, you may only need to backup the system once per year!
How fast does HardGuard™ back up or restore my hard drive? It usually takes HardGuard less than a minute to back up your hard drive. And it only takes a few seconds to restore your hard drive to your backup version.
But aren't software programs just as good? NO! HardGuard is different—and better—because it works on the BIOS level of your computer—the most basic level of information there is in a PC. No software program does this. That's because most software programs work on higher levels by writing into your operating system and storing information in your hard drive. That means their protection is worthless if you have software failure, which causes 90+% of all computer problems. But HardGuard completely restores your hard drive because it works a step below—on the BIOS level—where nothing can corrupt the information it has stashed away.
Does HardGuard™ have a security feature? Yes. HardGuard has a password and supervisor menu that gives you complete control over HardGuard activity—and therefore what's on the hard drive. Users (like your kids and roommates) cannot access HardGuard without your password, so any changes they make can be "reversed" when you restore your hard drive to the last backup you made. The bottom line is your hard drive is locked up like Fort Knox.
How can I be sure HardGuard™ will work with my computer? HardGuard is designed to work in most makes and models of PC computers. It works with DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 9X & Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2K, Windows XP, and Windows Vista operating systems. HardGuard does not work in Linux, Apple Macintosh, or PowerMac computers.
Is HardGuard™ difficult to install?
No! HardGuard comes with complete instructions for an easy, fast installation. It normally takes 3 to 5 minutes for a typical installation. (Don't worry, if you can plug in a lamp, you can install this card.)
Will HardGuard™ affect any of my computer programs? No. HardGuard does not affect any computer programs because it works on the BIOS—or lowest—level of your computer; all software programs work on higher, more unstable levels.
Will HardGuard™ affect computer speed? You should not notice any difference in your computer's speed.
Remember, the Hard Guard is a hard disk protector. When you install your Hard Guard the card links to your system BIOS and takes control of all HDD I/O functions. At the time of installation (and whenever you "backup") your Hard Guard identifies all the areas on your HDD that have information, and prevents any application (or virus) from writing to those areas. Your system will still be able to read the information and use the files. Whenever you attempt to modify a "protected" file, the changes are redirected to a different location on your HDD. The original unchanged files are kept hidden from the system. It is sort of like having a "read only" hard drive. This redirection to the changed files is totally transparent to your applications. The overhead for the redirection is measured at the nanosecond level and is practically so quick that it doesn't cause any noticeable delay from the perspective of a user.
Will HardGuard™ fix a problem in my computer when I install it? No! HardGuard is a protection device for your hard drive, not a remedy for a sick computer.
